Independent Living Skills Classes at The Adaptive Athlete, Inc.

$200 per day

The Adaptive Athlete's Independent Living Skills program is a structured, individualized, and social opportunity for adults 18 and over to gain and maintain functional life skills needed for independence in social emotional, domestic, career goals, and self-help skills.

Independent living skills at The Adaptive Athlete, Inc. focuses on the following skills: budgeting, domestic responsibilities, social emotional skills, with peers and others, career skills, relationships, self-care, and self-management.


  • Financial Responsibility - Facilitate the understanding of cost, utilization of money, budgeting, saving, and identifying appropriate change and cost of items.
  • Domestic Responsibility - Facilitate keeping a clean environment, grocery shopping, caring for others (pets, plants, etc.), and the identification of personal domestic needs.
  • Social Emotional - Understanding relationships, the communication of needs and emotions, how to communicate with peers, co-workers, and authorities, and social cues.
  • Self-care - Hygiene, relaxation, coping strategies, safety in communication, safety in home, nutrition, etc.
  • Self-management - Increasing independence, building confidence, maintaining individualized goals and plans, etc.
  • Community Based Trainings - Our adults will be provided with opportunities to practice skills learned in the ILS setting in real life community outings.

Get Ready to Join Us!

Before diving into the fun and excitement of our Independent Living Skills program, there are a few prerequisites to ensure every child has the best experience possible. We want to make sure that each athlete is prepared to thrive in our supportive environment. Check out the requirements below to see if your child is ready to join The Adaptive Athlete family!

  • How old must you be to participate in ILS?

    Adults must be at least 18 years old to join ILS.

  • Are there any skill level requirements?

    • Your adult cannot have any prior engagement in aggresive (to self or others) behavior.
    • Your adult must have a modality of communciation (e.g. some vocal communication, AAC devices, etc.)
    • Your adult must follow a minimum of 3 consecutive step directives without support.
    • Your adult must have the flexibility to transition multiple times across multiple environments.
    • Your adult must be able to respond to group instructions.
    • Your adult must be toilet trained.
  • What should my child wear?

    Your adult should wear athletic wear, as part of the ILS program involves an hour of fitness. Adults will have the opportunity to change in and out of athletic wear, meaning that attire should be appropriate in a social setting. Gang related, depicition of harm, or clothing that exposes body parts are strictly prhobited. Adults will be engaing in forms of athletics to include sports, jumping on trampolines, and resistance training, and should refrain from wearing jewlery that could present safety hazards such as dangling or hooping earings and necklaces.

  • Do I need to register in advance?

    Yes, all participants must request more information from the tab above and schedule a date and time for an assessment prior to enrolling into the ILS program.
